This will be my second year to attend the national Pathways to Prosperity conference. Last year’s conference in Montreal was very interesting – unlike most conferences I attend, the focus is not on teaching, but on immigration – newcomer settlement and integration in Canada. Last year my co-worker and I presented a poster on LINC field trips. This year we are presenting on photovoice as an empowerment tool for LINC classes. Check out the poster abstracts here. We are lucky number 13!

While researching the importance of recreation for newcomers to Canada, we came upon Lauchner et al.’s use of photography and storytelling to give new immigrants a sense of belonging and connection and a chance to share their lived experience across cultures. We then became interested in the research technique of photovoice to empower students and allow for connection to real world experiences and interactions.
But the bigger purpose of photovoice as a policy changer is too large a scale. We are interested in change within the students and their connection to their new country and friends. Strack et al. call this level – photovention and it can be seen in the Individual area of the Social Ecological Model.

H5P Experimentation – First try at an interesting video on photovoice
I have wanted to learn how to use H5P for the longest time. Here is my first creation – just adding two questions to a photovoice video. I’m looking forward to seeing how I can continue to work with both H5P and the idea of photovoice, or photovention in my adult EAL class. I am impressed at how well H5P works within WordPress.
